A delegation from the Royal college of defense studies (RCDS) led by Maj Gen  Felix Gedney, the senior  directing staff (SDS) visited the National defence college Kenya, on Monday 04 May 2026, as part of an international study tour aimed at deepening strategic understanding and strengthening defence cooperation between partner nations.

The delegation was received by the commandant of the college, Lt Gen Juma Mwinyikai, who welcomed the team and emphasized the importance of sustained collaboration among institutions responsible for shaping strategic leadership, national security policy, and regional stability. During the visit, the delegation was taken through a comprehensive brief on the college, its mandate and its role within the wider structure.

The brief outlined the college’s core mission of preparing senior military officers and civilian leaders for high-level strategic responsibilities through professional military education , research and policy oriented discourse. Discussions also explored the evolving regional and global security environment, with particular focus on the role of strategic leadership in responding to emerging and complex security challenges.

The visit to NDC by RCDS drawn from 17 countries marked the first in a series of RCDS international study tours to African countries, including South Africa and Ghana. The engagement provided the delegation  with an opportunity to gain insight into Kenya’s national security outlook, regional dynamics and the role played by NDC in shaping strategic thought within the defence sector.

The visit further underscored the longstanding bilateral relations between Kenya and the United Kingdom, particularly in the areas of defence cooperation, counter-terrorism, peace support operations and professional military training. Both sides reaffirmed the value of continued institutional exchanges in fostering mutual understanding and enhancing international security collaboration. Established in 1927 as part of the UK defence academy, The Royal college of defence studies is internationally recognized for developing strategic thinkers and senior leaders drawn from military and civilian institutions across the world.
